BATTLE FOR THE BOARDWALK
A documentary by Aaron Waugh
The Battle For The Boardwalk is not only an enthusiastic, heartfelt tribute
to the spirit of Venice Beach, but hearkens to the world east of its setting.
It cries for salvation in the wake of capitalism and enterprise. Waugh
has painted a melodic canvas that is Venice Beach, utilizing the people as the
colors upon his palette.
Set in present day Venice Beach, California, the story documents the struggle
between vendors and artists, not only dividing east from west, but what is deemed
art and religion. These factors pay high dividends, with final judgment
resting in the hands of City Hall, as the clash between commercial and artistic
ventures come to a head.
Waugh has counterbalanced the political side with sweet and oft times poignant
captions of the people who inhabit and visit this place where, Bohemia holds
on for dear life. Whether or not Venice Beach remains a place for
liberals and freedom of expression may lie in the hands of this work nevertheless,
it will prove to be a wonderful gem for the time capsules of tomorrow.
